DONE DEAL: Red sox possibility of landing the top target.
Despite rumors, the Giants have a “strong possibility” of landing the top target from the Red Sox.
One of the top speculated targets for the Boston Red Sox may shortly sign with another team.
This winter, Boston has been linked to All-Star slugger Jorge Soler several times. While a signing still would make sense, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi says the San Francisco Giants have a “strong possibility” of acquiring Soler.
“I don’t see a better fit than a reunion for (Cody Bellinger) and the North Siders,” Morosi stated. “After struggling mightily toward the end of his Dodger career, Bellinger found a home in Chicago. The (Chicago Cubs) have flexibility at his two positions — first base and center field.”
“And though he’s not listed as one of the Big Four, I see Jorge Soler and the Giants as a strong possibility, as Susan Slusser indicated recently in the San Francisco Chronicle.”
The Red Sox would be crazy to pass up Soler. A right-handed slugger is needed by Boston to take Justin Turner’s place. In addition, the Red Sox have stated that if they add a new designated hitter, they want a man with defensive flexibility.
The 31-year-old can provide some pop in the middle of the lineup in addition to helping out in the outfield. Last season, Soler slashed 36 home runs and drove in 75 runs.250/.341/.512.
This winter, he has been connected to the Red Sox several times, but it appears that San Francisco might wind up signing him. It appears that the Red Sox will need to move quickly if they hope to close a deal.
