JUST NOW: Dallas Cowboy DC Dan Quinn’s give reasons while Mike Zimmer is qualify to be.
The cowboys’ Michael Irvin Explains Why Quinn’s ‘Calm’ Zimmer D May Be Better.
FRISCO: I’ve known Mike Zimmer and Michael Irvin for more than thirty years. Furthermore, none of their personal styles nor their “football styles” would be described as “calm.”
However, as the Dallas Cowboys are putting the finishing touches on their plan to have Zimmer rejoin them as defensive coordinator, Irvin is furious about Zim’s impending “calm” demeanor.
“Calm, Zim? Michael? The coach at The Star who, according to Darren Woodson, is going to “shock the system”? In what way?
“Mike Zimmer will bring a more calm approach,” Irvin told TMZ. “and he’ll make every team walk the ball down the field.”
Irvin uses the word “calm” to indicate that the Dallas defense, which he describes as a group of risk-takers under former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, won’t have to do so in the future.
Nothing above is intended to “rip” Quinn; his performance in obtaining the head coaching position in Washington was outstanding. However, Irvin, a Cowboys legend and Hall of Famer, believes Zimmer’s approach may be even more “complementary” because defensive risks are unnecessary given Dallas’ offensive strength (head coach Mike McCarthy’s squad finished first in the NFL in scoring last year).
“If you’ve got an explosive offense,” Irvin stated, “and the other team has to walk the ball down the field, it gives you a better chance at winning.”
Once more, for translation: Irvin – who also stated he’s not “healed” from the Cowboys’ most recent playoff failure – is suggesting that Zimmer, who was on the 1995 Super Bowl staff in Dallas, will utilize a defense that forces teams to forge long drives down the field that’s the “walk.”
Does that mean Quinn isn’t “better” than Zimmer? That is not the point; the point is what will most likely make the 2024 Cowboys win more games than the 2023 Cowboys. And Michael Irvin thinks they’ve found the solution.
