Veteran 3B Signs White Sox Minor League Contract.
On Wednesday, veteran infielder Mike Moustakas was signed by the Chicago White Sox to a minor league contract. Using social media, the team made the agreement formal announcement. Moustakas has been invited as a non-roster player to the White Sox spring training.
White Sox Sign Mike Moustakas
Over the course of his 13-year career, the 35-year-old Moustakas has played for multiple teams. The Kansas City Royals, with whom he won the 2015 World Series, are the team for whom he is best remembered. At the 2018 trade deadline, he was moved to the Milwaukee Brewers, where he played for one and a half years. In 2019, he appeared in three and the most recent All-Star games with Milwaukee. After that, Moustakas signed a three-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds, a team marred by injuries.
The offensive production of Moustakas has decreased since he left the Brewers. In 112 games during the previous season, he hit.247 with 12 home runs and 48 RBI. Compared to his 35 home runs and 87 RBI in 2019, that is a huge drop. He had hit a career-high 38 dingers with the Royals two years before. Although age and injuries have taken their toll, Moustakas may be able to start over if he makes the big league squad out of spring training.
Moustakas splits his time between first and third base these days, having previously been a third baseman. He’s also occasionally DHed. The rebuilding White Sox would have some infield versatility if he can have a strong enough spring to make the 25-man roster. Moving Moustakas around would not only help them to see where he fits in best, but it would also make it easier for younger infielders to transition to major league repetitions. It will be interesting to see Moustakas’ performance in the spring and whether the team chooses to send him back to Chicago in the east.
