Which free agents are the Texans most concerned about this offseason?

This summer, the Houston Texans will have a large number of important free agents.
Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, who appears to have attracted interest from almost every club with a coaching opening this summer following his work with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, is perhaps the most likely player to leave the Houston Texans this offseason.
However, after an incredible 2023 season, coach DeMeco Ryans and general manager Nick Caserio will need to make decisions on a number of other important players who might become free agents this winter.
Nothing remains the same in this league. It was our moment. After the club’s defeat to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday in the Divisional Round, Ryans said, “This team won’t be the same, whether it’s players and coaches.” “It’s constantly changing and evolving.”
The good news is that this summer, the Texans should have over $71 million in cap space available. The truth is that, in order to keep important players from the 2023 squad, at least some of that money may need to be set aside. The six most prominent Texans who will be available as free agents this summer are shown below.
Kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, No. 6
Over his seven-year career, Fairbairn has been a member of the Texans; his current contract, which is set to expire in 2023, is for four years and $17.65 million. Despite missing a 47-yard field goal try in the Ravens game on Saturday, the 29-year-old is coming off of what may have been his greatest season to date. Fairbairn made 27 of 28 field goals during the regular season, including five of six from beyond fifty yards.
No. 5: Devin Singletary is rushing back.
Singletary showed promise throughout his four years with the Buffalo Bills, but after agreeing to a one-year, $2.75 million free-agent contract with the Texans in the summer, he assumed the biggest job of his career in 2023. This past season, Singletary led the Texans in running with a career-high 898 yards. Singletary isn’t someone you can throw the ball to 300 times a year at 5-foot-7 and 203 pounds. However, he has a lot of postseason experience and is a great offensive complementary player. If Slowik obtains a coaching position of his own, you wonder if he will want to lure Singletary along
Fourth: Tight End Schultz, Dalton
It’s possible that Schultz may never surpass his 2021 Dallas Cowboys season, in which he caught 78 catches for 808 yards and eight touchdowns. Even so, he signed a prove-it contract with the Texans that paid him $6.25 million in 2023, and he was successful for them. Schultz caught 55 catches for 588 yards and five touchdowns in 15 games. Schultz, who is still only 27, shouldn’t have any trouble playing in the NFL for ten years or more.
Third: Cornerback Steven Nelson
Before signing with the Texans in 2022, Nelson played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Kansas City Chiefs during his career. Nelson, who turns 31 this week, is having one of his best seasons as a player; in 2023, he recorded 63 total tackles and four interceptions for the Texans. Nelson’s age will likely restrict the duration of his deal, but he should have a good summer.
No. 2: Blake Cashman, a linebacker
Considering that the Texans traded a sixth-round selection to the New York Jets in March 2022 to get Cashman, it’s safe to say they received a nice return on their investment. In 2023, Cashman had a great season while playing for Ryans, recording 106 total tackles, nine stops for a loss, and five quarterback hits. In 2023, Pro Football Focus rated him an impressive rating of 83.7. Throughout his three seasons with the Jets, Cashman suffered his fair share of injuries, so it will be fascinating to see whether Houston is willing to make a long-term investment on the 27-year-old. However, the Texans will miss Cashman’s presence if he is not returned.
No. 1: Defensive End Jonathan Greenard
A third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Greenard picked the perfect time to have the best season of his career. Across 15 games for the Texans this season, Greenard posted 52 combined tackles, 22 quarterback hits, 15 tackles for a loss, 12.5 sacks and a forced fumble. The 26-year-old is a franchise tag candidate if a long-term deal can’t be reached.
