Following two years out of the league and a 2023 season away from football, the former Broncos offensive coordinator has signed on to coach the quarterbacks for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network broke the initial news of the hire.
The decision is noteworthy since Scangarello was coaching USC quarterback Caleb Williams personally. Williams is a quarterback who is predicted to choose first overall in the NFL Draft in April. One position behind the Broncos for the 13th overall pick is Las Vegas.

Rich Scagarello’s one and only season as a Bronco was not a great one.

As the offensive coordinator for the Broncos, Rich Scangarello only managed to serve one season. He was brought on by the organization in early 2019 to work with head coach Vic Fangio. After the plan to rehire former head coach Gary Kubiak as an offensive play-caller fell through, Scangarello was added. Kubiak then joined the Minnesota Vikings, helping them win their way back to the postseason.

Broncos OC Rich Scangarello puts new twist on familiar offense

In the meantime, Scangarello’s one and only season with the Broncos was turbulent, marked by awkward tight-end end-around calls, Joe Flacco throwing playcalling under the bus following what ended up being his last Broncos start, and the addition of Drew Lock to the starting lineup in Week 13. Lock started for the Broncos and went 4-1, but his returns decreased following a career-high showing in his second assignment versus Houston in Week 14 of that campaign.

Moving vehicles were kept busy by Scangarello in the years that followed. Before joining the Broncos, he worked for the 49ers for one season as the quarterbacks coach after serving one season as a senior offensive assistant in Philadelphia. In 2022, Scangarello assumed control of the offensive play-calling at the University of Kentucky. But even with Will Levis, a potential NFL starter at quarterback, the season was lackluster. He was discharged by UK prior to its bowl match.

Before he started working with Williams to prepare him for the NFL, Scangarello took a break from football in 2023. Although the Raiders probably have little chance of making a daring 12-spot move up the draft board to select Williams, that connection will probably spark curiosity. As a result, Scangarello is probably going to collaborate with either incumbent Aidan O’Connell or a mid-Round 1 quarterback like Bo Nix.
