The Miami Heat will play their season opener in New Orleans on Friday night with the goal of improving upon their current 30-25 record and Eastern Conference seventh-place finish.
Now is a wonderful moment to reflect on the season and how we got here before moving forward. These five key Heat statistics provide context for the current season and can be used to forecast future developments.

After the Heat acquired Terry Rozier last month, his rim pressure was highly discussed; but, the numbers don’t initially seem to show much of a difference. Less than one-third of the Heat’s shots are usually made at the rim, with or without Rozier.
But after you pass that threshold, you’ll be able to distinguish differences.
Since replacing Kyle Lowry with Rozier, Miami’s shot profile has changed significantly, primarily in the area of corner 3-pointers. The Hat’s 8.8 corner 3-point attempts per game before the move put them in 15th place. They are making 11.7 attempts from the corner per game on average since the deal. That would put them first in the league for the entire season and good for fourth place during that period.

In this video, Rozier enters the paint and then passes the ball to Josh Richardson, who is in position to make a 3-point shot. Although Richardson’s open shot resulted from drawing numerous defenders with his paint penetration, Rozier isn’t given credit for the rim attempt.
The Heat can be lethal when those corner threes are falling, as we seen during their runs to the Finals last year. By adding Rozier to Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo—two players who previously created the majority of Miami’s corner 3-pointers—the team strengthens its position. One major factor in the inflated numbers is Rozier. Although he isn’t shooting as many shots as he was in Charlotte, he is still going into the paint and creating opportunities for his new teammates that Lowry was unable to create.
