The 2023 NFL season was a complete bust for the Carolina Panthers. With Bryce Young at quarterback and controlling the action from under center, their offense was particularly awful. But might adding Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver and soon-to-be free agent Mike Evans give that offense a major boost this offseason? Evans is a great fit for the Panthers, according to ESPN’s Matt Bowens, who also happens to be quite familiar with Evans.
After recording 1,255 receiving yards and a league-high 13 touchdown catches in the same offensive scheme for Tampa Bay last season, Evans may accompany Panthers coach Dave Canales to Carolina. Evans would be an instant (and much-needed) upgrade for because he is still performing at a very high level.
In the 2023 NFL season, Evans, with Canales as the Buccaneers offensive coordinator, recorded 1,255 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 79 receptions and 136 targets. Depending also on how much improvement Bryce Young shows, Evans could have a better and more productive stint in Carolina in 2024.
But those are all football conjectures for now, as everyone awaits which team will win the Mike Evans sweepstakes in NFL free agency. Although Evans has never played for a team other than the Buccaneers, in the offseason he may feel tempted to pursue a higher contract and a better football atmosphere in the hopes of winning the Super Bowl. But it doesn’t seem like the Panthers are prepared to provide Evans a winning environment just yet. Having said that, Evans would have unchallenged WR1 status in Carolina.
