DONE DEAL: San Francisco issues with their quarterback.
The 49ers are the “Best” Place for the troubled quarterback to land.
Sam Darnold, the backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, may become a free agency next month, but the reigning NFC Champions may choose to go with a well-known player instead.
Jimmy Garoppolo was mentioned by Adam Wells of Bleacher Report as a potential in light of the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback’s impending release. Due to his infractions of the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug rules, Garoppolo will miss two games of the upcoming season, which will probably drastically reduce the cost of signing him.
Wells stated in a story published on February 16 on the “best landing spots” for Garoppolo, “Let’s state up front that this one feels very unlikely to happen, but there are reasons not to immediately dismiss it altogether.”
Wells went on, “One of the reasons to be skeptical of a reunion is that Garoppolo seemed okay leaving the 49ers after he mentioned ‘a lot of weird situations’ with the organization following Trey Lance’s offseason trade to the Dallas Cowboys.”
From 2017 until 2022, Garoppolo was a member of the 49ers, where he appeared in two NFC Championship Games and the Super Bowl. With Lance, the third overall choice in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Niners attempted to move on from him.
When Lance hurt his ankle in 2022, Garoppolo was given another chance, but he too got hurt, making room for Brock Purdy. After 2022, Garoppolo signed a free agent contract and moved to Las Vegas.
As for 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Wells wrote, “his actions over the years do indicate he was ready to move on long before it actually happened. Shanahan hasn’t publicly said anything negative about Garoppolo.”
“Given the current state of the quarterback depth chart as of 2024, the 49ers require a backup. Their No. 2 and No. 3 choices for this season, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen, are scheduled to become free agents, Wells continued.
