LOS ANGELES Eric Bieniemy is about to leave for his next assignment back home.
According to two people familiar with the issue who spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday, the former offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Commanders is anticipated to take on the roles of associate head coach and offensive coordinator at UCLA.
The individuals conversed with the Working under Andy Reid for ten seasons with the Chiefs, Bieniemy was a key contributor to Patrick Mahomes’ growth into one of the league’s top players. Mahomes won MVP awards for the third time after leading the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl victory in five years.
Before the Chiefs defeated Baltimore in the AFC title game, Reid invited Bieniemy in to talk to the offensive line.
Mahomes remarked, “Having EB in the building is always great.” You can feel his energy and mentality just by being around him; he has an intense personality, but he also seems to enjoy it. He enjoys being present, contributing to the team, and being a part of that environment. Just
His enthusiasm came through as he spoke. Guys may have felt a slight chill down their spines, thinking, “Hey, EB’s back here.” He obviously missed out on the chance to become head coach, but I’m glad he’ll still be able to coach and influence football in the future.
Bieniemy moved to Washington to take complete command of the play-calling duties and to get out from Reid’s shadow. For a 4-13 club that lacked skill in general, he produced erratic outcomes. After quarterback Sam Howell, the Commanders had the 24th-ranked offense in the league at the end of play.
His prospects as a coach are excellent. Prior to the Super Bowl, Reid stated of Bieniemy, “I’m obviously a big fan of his and I know the things that he can do.”
Bieniemy went to Bishop Amat High School in La Puente, California, which is located in Southern California and approximately 20 miles east of Los Angeles’ downtown.
This is Bieniemy’s first position in higher education since 2012, when he was Colorado’s offensive coordinator and running backs coach.
UCLA was Bieniemy’s second college coaching position. In addition to serving as the running backs coach for three seasons, he coordinated recruiting for the Bruins in 2005.
Foster, a seven-year Bruins assistant, departed last month to take a position as the running backs coach for the Las Vegas Raiders, but with Kelly’s exit, he went back to his alma mater.
Kelly had a 35–34 record while playing for the Bruins, but the team was beginning to resemble a stagnant program in advance of its Big Ten transition.
